Overview and Responsibilities

The Technical Artist (TA) acts as a bridge between our artists, animators, project managers and software engineers. The main areas of responsibilities include art production workflows, rigging, skinning, tools & pipelines, asset optimization & integration, artist support and shader development. TAs are expected to assume ownership over any art-related technical issues that arise on the project and bring them to resolution. This often includes delegating to / mentoring more junior staff on the team. Candidates must demonstrate a comfort level in working with both art and technology.



  • Troubleshooting problems related to the setup of art in game engines (Unity strongly preferred). This may include diving into projects that have already been built
  • Designing an art style/look for a project through research, design, creative discussion, etc.
  • Designing environments, characters, props, in 3D, 2D Sourcing or creating 3D models. Optimizing, downres-ing or fixing existing models
  • Setting up materials, including PBR materials (e.g.: familiar with using specular, normal, albedo and AO maps)
  • Setting up lighting in-engine, baking and painting texture maps, baking a normal map from higher poly meshes, creating shaders in a node-based editor or written in HLSL
  • Delegating work to other artists, giving context and feedback when necessary
  • Figuring out a strategy and workflow for getting an art style to work within the technical limitations of the project
  • Working in close collaboration with the engineers to figure out the best way to set up the art in the project and solve art-related problems that occur during development
  • Responding to feedback and working iteratively and collaboratively on design with team members, clients, and partners
  • Creating VFX (esp. Unity’s particle systems or VFX graph) Animating in Unity (or similar game engine)
  • Working with game engine UI
  • Working with photoshop to create assets such as tiling textures, particle sprites, masks or textures that store specific information in their color channels.


  • 2+ years of experience working in Unity.
  • At least 2 shipped products
  • Experience working on teams
  • Ability to research and learn how to use new tools (e.g.: figuring out how a Unity asset store spline tool works, learning how to use an unfamiliar rendering pipeline, an unfamiliar painting software, etc.)
  • Artistic eye for what looks good and for matching art styles
  • Understanding of realism (e.g., how light works, etc.)
  • General understanding of how the different parts of a game work together (e.g., experience making their own games is helpful)


Preferred Qualifications

  • Creating rigs and animations for use in Unity
  • Maya skills
  • 2D art skills: painting, vector art skills, animation, illustration etc.
  • Experience working with Figma or similar tools to design UI
  • ┬áProficient scripting/programming in python, C++ and C#
  • Experience working with Unity ShaderGraph, Amplitude, or any other node-based shader editor.
  • Experience working with version control software such as Sourcetree
